JR transforms the Pont Neuf into a monumental cavern: an immersive tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude

Paris, May 21, 2026 – French artist JR, known for his monumental and participatory art projects, has just unveiled his new ephemeral work: “The Cave of the Pont Neuf.” This spectacular installation, on display from June 6 to 28, 2026, pays homage to the historic wrapping of the Pont Neuf by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

in 1985, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of this landmark event.

An immersive and symbolic work

"The Cave of the Pont Neuf" is a structure 120 meters long, 20 meters wide, and up to 18 meters high, recreating a giant stone cavern in trompe-l'œil. The artwork envelops the oldest bridge in Paris, from the Quai de la Mégisserie to the Place du Pont-Neuf-Christo-et-Jeanne-Claude on the Île de la Cité. The interior of the cavern, open to the public, promises a unique sensory experience, designed as a symbolic journey into the unknown.

JR collaborated with Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, to create an immersive soundscape, reinforcing the mystical and monolithic aspect of the installation paris.fr+2.

An artist committed to the Parisian landscape

JR is no stranger to transforming the Parisian landscape. After making his mark on the Opéra Garnier with his "JR at the Opera" project in 2019, where he transformed the iconic spaces of the Palais Garnier with monumental photographic installations, he is once again demonstrating his artistic audacity by tackling the Pont Neuf. These two projects, though very different, share the same ambition: to make art accessible to all and to transform public space into a stage for dialogue and emotion.

A dialogue between past and present

This ephemeral artwork juxtaposes the raw and wild with the refined elegance of Paris, creating a dialogue between past and present. JR drew inspiration from the quarries of the Oise region, where the bridge's stones originated, and commissioned Breton artisans to create the hand-sewn canvases.

As with the wrapping of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, "La Caverne du Pont Neuf" is entirely financed by private partnerships and the sale of works by JR, without recourse to public funds.
